Academy Sports + Outdoors continues to extend its brick-and-mortar market reach.
The sporting goods retailer has opened its first store in the state of West Virginia, a 60,000-sq.-ft. plus location at Tanyard Station shopping center in Barboursville.
In addition, Academy Sports has entered the Tampa Bay area of Florida, opening a 50,000-sq.-ft. store in Pinellas Park. It’s the chain’s first location in Tampa Bay and 14th overall in Florida. The two new locations follow the opening of a 50,000-sq.-ft. Academy Sports outpost in Meyerland, Texas, its 33rd store in the Greater Houston area.
In April, Academy Sports opened its first new store in two years, in Conyers, Ga. The company has opened nine new stores in 2022, with plans to continue its expansion efforts beyond 2022. The company has set a goal of opening 80 to 100 new stores during the next five years.
“Academy Sports + Outdoors is excited to kickstart fun in the Barboursville and Tampa Bay communities by providing customers what they need to make pursuing their sports and outdoors passions easy at great low prices,” said Sam Johnson, Academy’s executive VP of retail operations.
The stores offer an assortment of athletic, casual, and work shoes, sports and outdoors equipment, and clothing for men and women from top, national brands, along with Academy’s exclusive, private label brands.
The stores also have everything customers need to create a backyard oasis with a wide selection of patio sets, barbecue grills, and outdoor games. Academy Sports also offers free services such as grill and bike assembly, scope mounting, bore sighting, line winding/spooling, and propane exchange. Customers can also purchase hunting and fishing licenses in stores.
In September, the company reported net sales of $1.69 billion for its second quarter. Year-to-date, Academy’s net sales totaled $3.15 billion.
Academy Sports is a leading full-line U.S. sporting goods and outdoor recreation retailer, with 268 stores across 18 states.
