West Virginia lawmakers on Tuesday passed a ban on nearly all abortions, the second state legislature to approve new restrictions since the Supreme Court eliminated the federal constitutional right to an abortion.
Lawmakers in Charleston had earlier encountered disagreements over some provisions and failed to quickly pass a ban after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade this summer. After a weekslong pause, the Republican-controlled state Senate approved the legislation 22-to-7 Tuesday afternoon, with the GOP-led House following in a 77-to-17 vote, as abortion-rights supporters protested outside the chambers to voice their opposition.
